View through the window of the tour bus as
the Arbor Day Awards winners tour the Arbor Day Farms
on Saturday, June 2, 2007. This field of hazelnut trees is a demonstration plot created by
The National
Arbor Day Foundation to show how a woody perennial crop such as this may be raised as a
substitute
for annual crops such as soybeans and corn. Benefits include a productive capacity
equaling that of an
equivalent plot of soybeans, elimination of fertilizers and plowing, and the elimination
of soil erosion
due to the soil-binding properties of the tree roots.
