A small security building is being constructed at the Makuyuni Mpingo Site. This building will house a security guard who will watch over the plot after mpingo trees are planted. It is essential to protect the mpingo seedlings after planting, because if there is no followup after putting the seedlings in the ground, all this effort could be for naught. After the mpingo trees have grown for a year or two, they will reach a height of 3-4 m., at which time they will be able to withstand some browsing by animals and still have leaves left with which to survive. Also, their bark will begin to thicken and be resistant to chewing from animals, so as to prevent the trees being girdled and killed. But until that degree of maturity is reached, much effort will be expended to insure their survival. 10 March 2008.
